Quaker State 400: NASCAR DFS Premium Rankings

Garage Gie and Dale are in Atlanta for the Quaker State 400 having a time, and I’m just over here thankful to not have same-day qualifying for DFS purposes. It really is a breath of fresh air to be able to take my time on preparing the rankings, projections, and my own personal lineups. Dale and Chase also handled the preview show, and as you will see in the rankings, I like all of their selections. Be sure to check that video out (attached to this article) while you prepare for race day.

I rank every driver and tier them based on price. There is no sense to compare Chase Elliot to Quin Houff, but comparing Chase Elliot to Kevin Harvick, for example, tends to make sense. The rankings will be posted first and represent the “initial pass” on my approach to the slate.

The notes represent my “second pass” and will provide more insight into how I am building lineups, what I have learned from looking around the industry, and mention any situations where I’m “hotter” or “colder” on anyone than when I set the rankings. For example, I may mention that there is a large gap in my interest level after the top three ranked drivers in a given tier. Another example would be to point out that drivers ranked 1-3 are interchangeable in terms of my interest. My suggestion is to enter multiple lineups and use the rankings and notes as a guide as you build lineups.

If you are a more serious player building 40+ lineups, I do suggest purchasing a lineup optimizer tool. These are affordable for our more advanced players and you can get them relatively cheap – especially if you are purchasing for NASCAR only. We will definitely look to partner with a third party or build one in-house for next season. If you need help selecting one, I’m here to help explain and recommend what you need. To reiterate – this is only for advanced players and you do not need this unless you have full command of the tool. In fact, it can do more harm than good if you do not know what you are doing.

NASCAR DFS Tiered Rankings – Quaker State 400

Tier 1 Notes

Stop me if you have heard this before, but this top tier is stacked. With tier 2 looking ugly, you already know that my plan will be to prioritize getting exposure here. Last year we crushed on 2nd races at the same track – whether doubleheader or separate weekends. The data suggests all these guys as better options to tier 2 minus some Bowman.

I did have a hard time ranking this tier just because it was razor thin in some instances. At the end of the day, I had to respect Hendrick speed. Harvick and Blaney have nice PD upside and are two of the “safer” plays in this tier. KFB is one of my favorite GPP dominators.

To be clear and reiterate, I don’t think anyone is a fade in this tier. Even Elliot and Hamlin have paths to score well here. If you aren’t playing many lineups though, I would prioritize the drivers ranked 1-5.

Tier 2 Notes

If you are looking for some fades or drivers to go underweight, this is a good spot to find them. I wanted to get some Chris Buescher action, but the price is crazy high here. Maybe that makes him an appealing GPP play but 8.6k is a little crazy.

Brad K makes for an interesting GPP play and Bowman should perform well, but other than that, I’ll be rooting against these guys on Sunday.

Tier 3 Notes

Ricky Stenhouse, A GG favorite, grades out as one of the top value plays at a very fair price of 6.6k. He projects to score similar or greater than the drivers priced at the top of this tier so it makes sense to save the salary. Suarez and AD join Ricky as my favorite plays in this tier, and the fact that AD got laps in yesterday for Xfinity only helps the cause. Preece has one of the best starting spots but received a price increase.

Tier 4 Notes

Short and sweet – minor to no interest to anyone ranked after 5th. Newman will be extremely chalky for good reason because of his projection. People will naturally move to guys like Bubba and Mike Mac as well to either join Newman or pivot off of him. Ranking this tier was pretty straightforward.

Platform Insights (DraftKings/FanDuel)

I’m adding this section just to point out a few things across platforms as I’m building lineups. As a reminder, place differential, laps led, and fastest laps are more important on DraftKings. FanDuel is all about finishing position so your goal should be to get as many drivers that can finish inside the top 10/top 5.

  • Pricing is so soft on FD this week. Expect a lot of duplicate lineups if you play the big tournaments because it is just so easy to build lineups.
  • Prefer Elliot on DK as a potential dominator priced 6th highest than on FD where dom points are less and he is priced 2nd highest
  • Preece is priced up on DK but 4k on FD
  • Chris Buescher is a stronger play on FD at the lower price
